Jailbreaking an iPhone…?
I’m gonna buy a Wi-Fi iPad pretty soon and in order to use it on the go without paying for the 3G plan I’m wanting to jailbreak my iPhone and use the MyWi app to tether it. However, there’s some questions I’ve got about jailbreaking:
1) Best jailbreak software? redsn0w, blackra1n, greenpoison, etc.?
2) Will I lose all my data when doing the initial jailbreak? Contacts, music, apps? I can resync to iTunes anytime and put all that back on there again, right?
3) Is it risky? As in, vulnerable to viruses and causes issues with iOS?
4) I know it voids the warranty, but I’ve heard restoring it still leaves traces and its a gamble whether Apple or not will fix it in the case it breaks because of that.
5) Can I still update iOS right from Apple without having to reset the jailbreak?
6) Can I still download stuff and sync from iTunes normally?
If it helps, the iPhone is an iPhone 4 and running iOS 4.2.1.
1. I personally used Limera1n, but Greenpois0n and Resn0w will work fine as well, depending on your preference. Don’t worry, they are all trustworthy, and will work.
2. You won’t lose any data doing an initial jailbreak. The only thing that will change on your iPhone/iPad is that Cydia will be added to your springboard. Also, you can sync with iTunes anytime you want, and it’ll all work fine.
3. It’s not risky, and won’t cause any viruses or issues with your device. Trust me. (: The only thing it’ll do is probably make your device a bit slower, or it might make your battery life shorter. But that’s pretty agreeable, considering that the tweaks that you may download, may affect how fast/slow your device is.
4. It’ll void your waranty, but once you restore it back to new using iTunes, your waranty will be back. You can’t leave traces if you restore. Just restore to default settings.
5. I believe taht there are ways to update without losing jailbreak, but I think they are just rumors. But for now, don’t update. (Why would you want to? Jailbreaking is a lot better than what apple gives you in their updates).
6. And yes, you can download stuff using your iTunes account, and sync normally, as if you weren’t jailbroken. everything will be the same, except for the fact that you have cydia! (:
