One of the hot digital releases from 2010, the iPad from Apple received a flurry of publicity and a whole heap of sales: 1 million units in its first month in the US, including 300,000 on the first day alone. It’s definitely popular, but is it worth buying? One debated point is what the iPad actually is – critics say that it’s just a larger version of the iPhone, while proponents argue it’s a more versatile, easily transportable laptop in the form of a tablet computer.
A large part of the debate centers on whether the iPad is more useful than a laptop. While it’s seen as more portable, it also lacks traditional laptop features such as a physical keyboard, DVD drive and USB ports. The touch screen operation and keyboard is generally seen as a plus, but if you’re looking to use the iPad in the same way you use your laptop, then you may be disappointed. It’s great for using the internet on the go, especially compared with smart phones.
One fantastic feature that definitely works in the iPad’s favor is the access to Apple’s iTunes and all of the apps that come with it. It even works as a rival to the e-readers that are currently on the market: being multifunctional, it’s not just limited to books. The email access function has received praise, as has the access to the internet. It’s also great for using on the go with access to apps such as maps and SatNav, among others.
One downside to the iPad is that you can’t use your current iPhone or other SIM in it as some people want to – you have to sign up to a special network plan to do this. There are also large variations in price depending on which model you buy. For example, you can choose a variety of memory options ranging from 16Gb to 64Gb and can go for a more expensive version that also comes with 3G connectivity, which has had a bit of a mixed response.
Overall, the iPad is a pretty nifty device but it’s worth bearing in mind the fact that it’s early days: there are still a few little kinks in the current model that should be ironed out with time. There are issues with displaying some websites, the speakers aren’t great and the lack of webcam is noticeable. Critics also argue that it gives Apple unfair control over how people access the internet, but as other companies introduce rival models, it stands to reason that this won’t last.
