i have never heard anything publicized about this ipod, and nobody that i’ve talked to has heard about it. is this legitimate or is it fake?

I would stay away from it. Screenless players aren’t really desirable. 4 gigs is too hard to navigate with no screen, you are forced to use iTunes and the crappy iPod earphones. The Seller also doesn’t supply a physical picture (just pics form the website)
If you want a small player like the shuffle, get the superior Sansa Clip. It has a 1 inch OLED screen, great sound quality and *gasp* Buttons! :O
