Apple Does It Again With Ping
The latest and potentially greatest Social Media network has arrived and its called Ping. If you have been living in a dark room these last few days, then you will have heard the hype and buzz around Apple’s attempt to pull in some of the enormous traffic created by Twitter and Facebook. As well as being a music social media platform, Ping attempts to take whats great about Facebook, Twitter and a smattering of Myspace and merge it together in an Apple-like way.
Adding up the success of those three sites, with over 1 billion users, its easy to see why Jobs and Apple would want to emulate rather than re-invent and when you consider how many people buy something with the Apple logo on, Ping would appear to be something every desktop PC fan, mac and iphone user will crave.
It also has the huge starting point of itunes 10 to build Ping from with close to 160 million users already in place. When you look at the bare facts and ignore the fact that Apple simply wants a piece of the social media pie, it actually makes a whole lot of sense and in some ways more so than either Facebook (you need to friend someone to find out about them) or Twitter (you often aren’t even sure the person you just followed is a human being). Whilst both Facebook and Twitter allow you to find people in to the same music as you are, its still pretty hit and miss, but with Ping, you can actually be friends with people who enjoy the same music without the hassle.
It could well be argued you can find those same people on Twitter or Facebook, but neither of those can really tell you what your friend is playing and what their song library looks like. If you like a particular niche of music and want to find more, its pretty tough out there right now and its unlikely your computer hardware is clever enough to have linked you to people on any other social medium capable of finding like minded people when it comes to a specific band.
Save for inventing a PC that uses no PC parts, Apple really seem to be able to do no wrong right now.
