IPOD File Compatibility?
Is the Apple Ipod compatible with general standards for audio, video, and photos, and able to play music and podcasts from anywhere, or does it only play material obtained from Itunes?
I’m looking for a general purpose player for audio and video podcasts and music and I don’t want to be limited only to Apple formats or have to do conversions all the time.

The iPod can play any of the files in this link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304784 . It does not matter where the files come from. However, if a file has DRM-protection and comes from a site other than iTunes then you will not be able to listen to it on an iPod.
You absolutely do NOT need to purchase music or videos from the iTunes Music Store. You simply download the music to your desktop and then drag and drop it into iTunes. For videos you’ll need a converter. There are free converters available.

If, for example, you wanted to put a .wma or .wmv file (both files not compatible with iTunes) into iTunes you would simply drag and drop the file into the iTunes interface. iTunes will ask for your permission to convert the file into something compatible. Then, you would click OK. Simple as that.
