The phone was developed in collaboration with AT&T Mobility and the total estimated cost, over 30 months, reached $150 million.
The first generation was officially unveiled on January 9th, 2007 at Macworld 2007. It went on sale a couple of months later on June 29th in the United States and later on was introduced in the United Kingdom, Germany and France in November of the same year, and in early 2008 in Austria and Ireland.
Only one year and a couple of months later, on June 11th 2008, Apple came back with the second generation of the iPhone, which was released in 22 countries, including here the original six. The iPhone 3G was commercialized before discontinuation in more than 80 countries and territories.
On June 8th, 2009, Apple announced the iPhone 3GS, the third model of the highly successful series, a phone that went on sale later on that month in the United States, Canada, and major countries from Europe. Due to the reason that main complained because of the hefty price tag, Apple decided to continue making the 8GB version of the 3G, selling it at a more affordable price.
The same thing happened when they’ve launched the iPhone 4, as the 3GS continued to be produced and was sold for less money. A few days ago, Apple announced that the 5th version of the iPhone will be unveiled sometime in September this year.
Now let’s talk about the main differences between these four generations. The original one had an aluminum back, very different from the 2nd and 3rd generation, which featured a hard plastic black. Another major difference of the 1st gen model is its flat back, as opposed to the rounded back of the generations that followed. The original model was available in only one color – “silver” aluminum, and three capacities – 4, 8 and 16 GB.
The iPhone 3G was the first model to come with an all-black plastic case and was available in two colors: black or white, with a rounded back. The 2nd generation was available in only two capacities – 8 and 16 GB. It looked virtually identical with the 3GS, except for the text printed on the back. The 3G was printed in a light-grey color, while the 3GS had reflective silver and matched the Apple logo above it. For this reason, the case of a 3G works very well on a 3GS, and vice versa.
The 3GS is still in production and is available in black or white plastic, with two different capacities – 16 or 32 GB. It is the first model of the series to support video recording, voice control, digital compass, along with Nike + iPod integration.
Lastly, the iPhone 4 comes in black (white will follow soon) and in two capacities – 16 or 32 GB. It has a redesigned case that it is considerably slimmer, featuring square edges and a glass back. Speaking of the back, it sports a 5 MP camera that has an LED flash to its right. In addition, the front-facing camera allows users to chat via FaceTime. The latest generation also has a better 3.5-inch widescreen Retina display that has a higher resolution.
