Apple Ipod Classic 120gb Silver

iPod Classic keeps restarting itself!?

I have the iPod classic 120GB and it is now constantly restarting itself with the silver apple screen. I decided to allow the battery to run down then came up with a yellow hazard sign and empty battery saying ‘connect to power’. I did and the restarting silver apple screen kept coming up.

I then held the middle and play button and went into ‘disk mode’ (black and white screen if that helps). Saying ‘OK to disconnect’ with a tick above it. When I unplug it from the power it just goes back the the apple icon & restarting itself shenanigans!!

When I connect to the computer and try and sync with iTunes nothing happens… Is my iPod repairable by myself/Apple people or do I have to buy a new one? Cheapest option is preferred as this iPod cost me quite a lot and had to run out of its warranty when it broke -.-

Please help! Thank you :)
Ollie

Probably you have a unrecoverable disk error due to impact damage!

Options: the hard disk has been dropped and damaged so refusing to boot up. Try the following If this fails then you have a damaged hard disk if there is NOT sign of it being dropped and its under warranty you might be able to get it replace under warranty at the store you bought it from.
If it gives sync errors or battery problems unexpectedly!

First when you installed itunes did you do it by downloading DIRECT from the PC you want to use it from as each version of windows (plus 32 or 64 bit) has its won version of itunes. PLUS did you INCLUDE the QUicktime element as quicktime is essential for itunes to run and this DOES NEED a PC restart to be fully active!

As battery base their charge on the USB power if its a low power USB connection the ipod will show fully charged relative to the USB power if this is low then the battery isn’t really charged properly and so will have a reduced life http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808.

but it could be because you are either having a driver conflict error (particularly with windows 7 and certain USB boards you will need to update the drivers for these – this is a known issue with windows 7 and affects many USB devices) but in general as detailed in the apple help page:-

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 for driver errors and http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369 for USB power issues

or more likely its a USB power issue. if its a Acer, Asus,Compaq, Dell, MSI or Packard Bell or LAPTOP then is 99% likley due to it having low spec 100mA usb ports instead of full spec 500mA ones.. Make sure you have a full power USB connection (many laptops and keyboard connectors only give 100mA max rather than the full 500mA, also do not connect via an unpowered hub either as this only PARTLY charges the ipod

connect it direct to the computer on a full power USB port or via a powered hub (mains transformer connected to it) and it should be OK.

Leave it charging on this for at least an hour before proceeding further.

make sure you have the latest itunes 9.0.2 (downloaded on your PC from www.apple.com/itunes/download then restart PC first) AND an itunes store ID, create the account using the itunes STORE within itunes (if you use debit or credit card or bank direct debit its instant if you use no payment or gift card it can take days for the account to be activated as it needs to confirm your ID and country by other means)
and reset the ipod before connection (menu and centre key or home and power key on touch till screen blanks then connect once it lights up).

the say YES to the ‘pair with this computer’ Message then RESTORE..

if this doesn’t work on your computer get a friend with a Mac to try as sometimes restoring to mac HFS format is successful when trying Windows FAT format isn’t – if this works then you will need to pair it back to your computer and restore it on yours for full compatibility as although macs can read windows format, windows cannot read mac format (to due with extended file attributes being in Macs but not FAT)

if after doing the USB power check you still have problems you need to call apple for a swap for replacement… as batteries can be killed by improper usage apple has a page at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1726 that tells you how to get the most from your battery
