The Google Nexus One : The Basics Explained
Google has created a lot of buzz around its own new handset to rival Apple’s iPhone – and it has arguably better specs on almost every feature it offers. But are the features on the Google Nexus One enough to change public opinion? In an attempt to prove itself as a competent mobile phone manufacturer in its own right, Google has recently released the Nexus One, a mobile built by the established manufacturer HTC, but branded solely as a Google phone. Some notable features of the Google Nexus One include a huge 3.7 inch (diagonally) screen with a resolution of 480 x 800, an accelerometer, multi-touch support a proximity sensor. The Google Nexus One is available with 512 megabytes of ROM, 512 megabytes of RAM and an SD card, expandable from 4 gigabyte up to a possible 32 gigabytes. Wireless internet is an expected feature in the Nexus one, as is Bluetooth, GPS and 3G.
Running a processor with clock speeds of around 1Ghz means that the Google Nexus One is one of the fastest handsets available. In accompaniment with that is the installation of the newest version of the Android operating system. As this is Google’s first real step into the Smartphone sector, the Nexus One will be the first handset that will have over-the-air updates available to users for patching the operating system, and also applications such as Google Maps and Google Calendar. Within a few weeks of release, Google had released a patch for the Android operating system enabling the use of multi-touch support for the screen, meaning one of the first ‘Android’ handsets with such features as ‘pinch zoom’. Recently, there have been a number of highly publicised problems with the Nexus One, including keypad malfunctions and, most notably, problems with Google’s customer service support; however the Google Nexus One is an extremely accomplished Smartphone, able to quite comfortably beat most rivals in most areas. Though the challenge always remains to usurp the Apple iPhone, handsets that are running the Android operating system, like the Google Nexus One, are quite happy in second place, ahead of much bigger rivals, such as Nokia, Samsung and the BlackBerry producer, RIM.
To summarize, the Google Nexus One is an extremely capable competitor to the Apple iPhone, bringing a huge number of features and abilities that make it a hard choice between the two. Both handsets do things differently and there are many things one can do but the other cannot. You will be happy with either of them, so it really just boils down to personal preference and cost.
